When the car is moving, but the engine is not spinning, the mainshaft
turns, but doesnt drive the counter gear, or the input shaft. The
counter gear is what throughs oil all over everything, which means that
the internals are spinning, but not really being lubes. Worse yet is
that the main shaft runs on roller bearings in the input shaft, which is
stationary and not getting oil too. This spins the rollers at about 30X
the mainshaft rate, which is not good considering there is no oil to
cool the bearing faces. Jarrid Gross
Jarrid, Thanks for the explanation! I had been wondering if I was
wasting my time to disconnect the drive shaft . Now I see that I am not.
It disconnected easily ( despite destroying 2 of the nuts and bolts) and
I rigged a hanger so it can remain engaged to the transmission.
Anybody know the American translation for a "shakeproof" washer ? Is it
just a good ol' lock washer? How do star washers compare with lock
washers in holding ability?
