hot or cold?

A question about adjusting valves: my book says to adjust them cold, but
articles in the archive say it should be done hot (with the head being
torqued cold). Which is right?

Also, I have low compression in #4, with the indications of bad valves.
To remove the cylinder head is it necessary to remove the tappet side
cover completely, or just where it attaches to the head (I am sure the
answer is to take the whole thing off, but I want to make sure before I
go to the trouble of removing everything that's in the way)?

And, finally, transmissions. There was some discussion a while back
about a kit to put a Toyota tranny in that is available from a guy in
New Zealand: has anyone done this? I got him to send me the brochure and
looks like everything is included for the swap, including a Supra
transmission (ratios= 3.56, 2.05, 1.38, 1., 0.85). Price, including
shipping, is US$985. (His web site is www.conversioncomp.co.nz ) Are
there any "original" O/D boxes out there, and what would it cost to
refurbish one? When I mentioned this to my dad he claimed that it would
be less expensive (though certainly not easier) to do an engine swap
with an appropriate 5-speed. I find this hard to believe. But I am not
interested in besting Camaro's at the drag strip, just want to cruise
peacefully down the highway- perhaps even hitting the speed limit at a
not outrageous number of rev's.

But anyway, what I really want is to get my cylinder head off, so any
help would be welcome! And I am definitely a novice, so don't hesitate
to include all the details.

Thanks,
Chris
