Well, I've been able to drive my Series V for two whole trouble free
days, until today!!
By the way, for no apparent logical reason, my fuel and temperature
guages now read correctly even though the instrument voltage regulator
wires are incorrectly plugged in (I have the double "I" instrument wire
plugged into the "B" post on the regulator. If I plug it where it's
supposed to go, on the "I" post, both guages "peg out" all the way to
the right.)
I dlrove about 125 miles in the heat today, water temp. stayed right
where it should (pretty much with the needle right in the middle of the
guage even in stop and go freeway traffic). About 20 miles from home on
the way back, I started to get a "stumble" accelerating in 3rd gear
between 2200 and 3000 RPM. Above 3000, it seems to pull well with no
stumble. Seems like more Strombergitis to me. Any ideas?
Then my more major (just because I've spent a lot of time and money on
this) problem came up. My cool "new" rebuilt overdrive, which functioned
perfectly for most of the trip, decided to not engage anymore. I should
say that numerous flicks of the column switch failed to engage the OD.
Once, between numerous failures, it did engage, but when I clicked it
off, no more overdrive for the rest of the drive home. It would not
engage. At home, repeated clicks of the column switch resulted in the
unit engaging for several times, then not, then occassionaly it would
again for several tries, then not again. I tried this with the motor on
and off, and I think in nuetral and 3rd and 4th, all with the same
results, intermittent operation.
Any help or suggestions on what to check for, and tests to conduct? I
hope this is just one of those electrical switches acting up and not
something internal to the transmission.
Finally, I've got brand new synchros in the above rebuilt overdrive
transmission. It is VERY difficult to engage 1st gear, and sometimes 2nd
also. 3rd and 4th are now pretty smooth. I almost have to force it into
1st from a stop, although sometimes I can find a spot from nuetral
through which 1st engages, but still usually it is very "notchy". Is
this normal for brand new synchros? Will they wear in and work better as
time goes on? I don't remember my brand new Series V in 1967 having
quite this problem, although the trans was a bit "tight".
