Hello Gang:
From a couple of suggestions from the list, I messed about with my
overdrive this morning and it seems, if I read the manual correctly, my
isolator switch is out of adjustment.
First off, I checked trans. oil level before and after a serious drive
and it seems right up to the top so no problem there.
I have found that the gear shift position is able to cause the OD to
dis-engage, or not engage at all, where it shouldn't happen. For
instance, driving in 4th with OD on, staying in 4th gear, if I move the
shifter toward second gear, OD clicks "off". If I understand correctly,
you should not be able to get it to switch off this way. With the
shifter in the neutral gate, OD clicks off as it should when the shifter
is moved toward 1st/2nd. Maybe, however, it clicks off too soon moving
in that direction, causing the problem.
The other day when I couldn't get OD to engage at all I wasn't aware of
the above theory of operation so I never thought to jiggle the shifter
in 4th gear to see if OD would then engage.
I am much relieved that it appears there's nothing internally wrong with
the trans/OD. Now, how do I adjust the Isolator Switch? I've read the
note on this in the shop manual, but it's unclear how to get to this
piece. Is this the piece right on top of the trans., and can it be
reached from the passenger compartment through that metal plate on the
top of the trans. tunnel?
The manual mentions adjusting this piece in and/or out to obtain the
correct setting, but will I need additional shims, or will I be able to
use the shims aleady in there? Does anyone have a picture of this piece
they could post, since it's not shown in the manual?
Thanks again for all the help!
