Yes, you cab get to the switch by removing the plate on the trans well.
It is the switch on the passenger side (if you have backup lights,
there will be another that looks just like it on the driver's side).
You'll see it on the shifter housing as soon as you get the plate off.
It's just a plain switch, so you do not need to return the wire to the
exact same position, just make sure there is one attached to each side
(there are two sets of two spade terminals).

I'm not sure if you need to add shims or remove them. Maybe the book
says. I've never done it, so I don't know. Try removing them first to
see if it fixes the problem. You should be able to get shims from
Smitty (619) 233-7937.
