My SV has been suffering from overheating on the highway and at long periods
of idle. Some people suggested it might be due to clogged water passages.
I popped the radiator cap and watched the flow which look reasonable.
I flushed the system twice with Preston Super Flush.
I started to change my timing chain this weekend and decided to pull the
head to have a look. The passages look open and clean at first visual
inspection. Could the water passages be clogged further up in the head
which would not be obvious initially?
So to review:
1) The thermostat was changed (and the gauge is accurate)
2) The water pump is tight but old
3) The Radiator is relatively clean (but still it is old)
4) Now the head appears clean
I think my next step is to have the radiator re-cored with a high efficiency
radiator (I think the guy said I could get up to 12 fins per inch). I
suppose that the radiator on the Sunbeam could be marginal and with any
additional, even minor clogging, it can't handle the additional stress of
+90 degree days.
As long as I have the water pump off I may go ahead and replace it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Steve Silverstein
