Well, I had my stereo looked at by the guy I bought the stereo from.
The system pulls 30 at all times and up to 38 or so on the peaks. It
appears that my battery is not suffering during highway driving, though
I've not tested it for more than a 25 minute drive. The lights do not
dim with the stereo on and turned up. When I stop and the idle is
below1500, the ammeter drops to -20 or so. If I let it stay there too
long the engine will want to cut off.
So, it is obvious that my only option is to switch to a higher output
alternator, at least 60 amps. There is some doubt that a GM unit will
clear my SS header (there is a pic at sunbeamalpine.org). Does anyone
know of a near bolt on that will fit? Someone mentioned that they had
a friend who mounted a Ford unit (post beck to me, please). Any help
would be much appreciated.
