While we are on the subject of how doors go together will
some one help me with the proper sequence of how you put one
of these back together after stripping for a complete paint
job. This is how I did it:
1. replaced all fuzzy rubber guides in window tracks.
2. reassembled doors
3. put hardtop on and used this to align the windshield.
(fore and aft using spacers on outside bolts.
4. the wing windows do not exactly align with the
windshield. The gap at the top is less than that at the
bottom by about 1/4 ".
Question -
The bottom of the window guides each have maybe a 1/2 inch
slot for fore-aft adjustment. Is this slop meant to adjust
the angle of the window and wing or is it there strictly for
fitting to the window only?
Should I align the windscreen to the wing windows and then
do something with the hardtop?
On this repaint project I relearned the old adage that you
check everything at least three times before committing to
final whatever. My SV had been sand blasted by the previous
owner with the result that all of the flat panels had
waves. I replaced the doors, hood and trunk with parts from
my parts car. The car came back from the painter with a
beautiful paint job and I started to put everything back
together.
When I was replacing the rear window guide on the driver's
side door - gasp - there was no bracket where the lower part
of this guide attaches. This bracket is spot welded to the
inside of the door and how a perfect in every other way door
came to be missing this bracket is a mystery.
I finally took an air chisel and opened up the wavy door,
cut loose the bracket and attached it to my repainted door
with sheet metal screws. This saved repainting another
door.
