Thanks for all the responses. My computer indicated that most of them were
not also sent to the group. So here is the list of suggestions:
1. Adjust the brake shoes inward to reduce the resistance and drag,
especially in case the shoes have worn a ridge at the outside edge which
the shoes sit inside of. ( I have always done this, but perhaps not
enough. I had not thought about the ridge problem before.)
2. Use a screwdriver to pry it between the drum and backing plate. My
concern here is that the backing plate would bend under the amount of force
necessary. But, it may be worth a shot. I have been doing this at night
after the kids go to sleep. So pounding with anything is out of the
question until the weekend.
3. There is a tool - a drum puller for about $39. I'm willing to bet
finding an extra long one for wire wheel hubs might be difficult.
Regardless, I think my wife has got me at the end of my new tool buying
habit.
4. GET A BIGGER HAMMER!
