I had a similar problem in removing the drums on my series II. It looked
like they hadn't been off in many years and the previous owner had damaged
them taking what look like bites out the edge.

I couldn't get them so even when the brake adjuster was fully backed off.

In the end I found the drum around the centre had become one with the hub.
A quick 'tap' with a large screw driver and hammer around the join broke
the seal and the drum came away easily.

When I got them off one of the slave cylinders had leaked badly and the
shoes had perished.
