Gary,
Back in the 70s when I joined Pacific Tiger Club, there was a member that
was making Alpine to Mazda powered "conversion" cars. His personal car
outran all of the Tigers down Interstate 5 enroute to Tigers United 4 at
Medford. He used an RX-3 engine.
He aligned the transmission shifter with the original shifter hole and
used 1955 Chevy donut motormounts to support the engine. He changed the
driveline using the Mazda universal at the front of the Alpine driveline, and
changed the original radiator to accept the upper hose on the passenger
(right) side (an alternative would be to use a radiator from a '69 fastback
Alpine/Rapier, which has the connection on the right to begin with). He put
a "real" oil cooler on it, because rotary engines are sensitive to hot oil.
I saw this car burn rubber for 200 feet, and considered altering my
Alpine to the same configuration...I built a 7500 rpm Alpine engine instead.
No regrets.
