Pete:

The Alpine starter uses a Bendix-type drive, and the solenoid is not involved
in moving the gear into the flywheel. What is possible is that someone
lubricated the drive or it is dirty, causing the gear to stick part way when
hot, and function properly after cooling. Removal and bush/brush replacement as
well as cleaning the drive is recommended. (also, check armature on a
"growler")
