How could that be? If the Rootes part number for S1 = S3, how could they
have different diameters? My reason for this thread of questions is to see
if I should even bother pulling the S3 ones I have and trying to put them
in the SV suspension. From McGovern's book, it sounds like the diameters
are "close enough". But, I don't know about the other variables as to what
spring rate and length so I can figure what height I'll get. I guess I
might as well try.
That being said, my Rootes Light Car Range Workshop Manual for the 1725
cars, in Section F, Page 5, shows a way to measure the distance between the
lower A-arm (the top of it) to the bottom of the metal stop for the rubber
snubber above it. It says that this distance is supposed to be 2" for
Alpines and 2.25" for all others. I measured mine last night and I am WAY
off this measurement. I'm at about 3", or 33% too high.
If there is a one to one relationship - ie if I take off a 33% of that
distance, I'll reduce the gap between the fender and the tire by 33%, that
would suggest a gap of 3" is the "correct factory" gap - for what that
guess is worth.
Here is a weird thing in the WSM. It says on page F16 "Insulators,
fabricated from hard rubber, are fitted between the top of each spring and
the inside of the crossmember. They were introduced at the following
chassis numbers: .... Alpine V 395000781." Yet to my knowledge all the
cars came with one. Ian even said he pulled the one in his S3 out. But,
if there was some sort of a change to the insulator, but not to the spring,
that would certainly explain why some later cars sit higher.
Anyone out there actually living without them? Does it make a big
difference in vibration or harshness?
