but when I tried to put her into gear I couldn't get into any forward
gear - all I got was a huge grinding of gears. I did manage to get it
into reverse but it was a real struggle. I turned the engine off and
then tried to start her again (along the lines of rebooting a PC if it
goes wrong!!!) this time in gear and it kept lurching forward and
stalling - clutch action had no effect...
Any one have any ideas as to what could be wrong? Answers gratefully
received.
Thanks again

Clive, It sounds like your clutch is not disengaging, possibly due to
a bad clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder or both..Was there any
sign of this problem in the past? Does it help any if you pump the
clutch a couple of times before trying to put it into gear? If so, that
would indicate fluid is getting past the rubber seals in the cylinders
and you should replace the seals. Kits to do both cylinders should cost
under $20 total or you could replace the cylinders for about $120 total.
One other thought- did you check the fluid reservoir? If it is low
and you have a leak in the system, that would be your problem.
