I would suspect your voltage reg. which I think is a sealed box on the S V.
When my series 1 had the battery put in backwards the voltage reg was
fried, also the hot wire to the coil was so badly burned that all the
rubber insulation was melted off. I replaced the voltage reg. and put in a
new coil wire and she fired first time. The PO told me (he was the one who
put the battery in backwards) that the car actually ran with the battery
backwards but soon quit and would not restart. The dist. and starter were
not effected, neither was the generator. Of course your situation is
different being you have an alternator. So I hope this helps somewhat. I
would try running a hot wire from the positive side of the battery to the
coil and see if it starts that way. If that works then you will know that
something in between is amiss. Like the voltage reg. or maybe even the
ignition switch.
