Today I decided I would tackle the strong smell of gas in the trunk. The
smell has always been strongest above the right side tank and I have
long suspected that there was a leak in the filler hose or breather
pipe. Replacing the filler hose hasn't helped a lot so I thought I'd
replace the breather hose in case this was perished.
It would appear that my Series V B395017660 is different to most in that
the breather hose which passes up under the rear valance is metal (not
rubber-apart from the end two feet on the left hand tank). Although I
can't find any reference to a metal breather hose in my parts manual it
certainly looks original and I can't see any way it could have been put
in other than at the time of manufacture.
Does any one know if late (ish) Series V's had a metal Balance pipe? Or
is my car just plain weird?
Weirdness is not uncommon with it as I have a photo of the car with its
first owner the day he brought it in which the Mk II headlight rims
(which weren't supposed to be introduced until 240 cars later) are
clearly visible!!!
Thanks
Karl
