Here is some interesting information off of eBay, of all places. This guy
has two roller bearing release bearings for sale:
1. Bidding is on 1 roller type release bearing (not carbon). this item
fits MGB and Sunbeam Alpine 63-65. The Carter part number is CB 2032.
2. Bidding is on 1 roller type release bearing (not carbon). this item
fits MGTC,TD,TF, MGA, Metropolitan, and Sunbeam Alpine 65+. The Carter part
number is CB 2033, and the Green part number is 46892
Funny how the later MG one fits the earlier Alpine. Of all things, I don't
seem to have a SS catelog here at work. I do have a VB one which does in
fact show 3 different release bearings for Alpines. I know Steve Sage was
recently raising questions about release bearings and lever arms because of
his notchy shifting that started with his new transmission and new roller
throw out bearing. I too have notchy shifting that started when I swapped
to a full sychro fine spline SV OD transmission and roller throw out
bearing. My notchiness is nowhere near the severity of Steve's. But, I
wonder if there is something more here than the tranny, but the roller
bearing. I suspect it is NOT the roller bearing though. I did not change
the base of the lever arm as Steve did. I did change the arm itself. But,
side by side comparison back then showed them to be identical. I actually
think mine is notchy even when the car is not running. It's been a while.
And, I'm only comparing this to the very smooth SV non-OD box I used to
use.
Does anyone know if the three different types of TO bearings will simply
not fit the other lever arms, so that there is no way the wrong one is in
there? I figure that even if the relative position of the surface of the
roller bearing is a bit off from the carbon ones, that should not make a
difference. Certainly correct me if I am wrong. But, my clutch seems to
be disengaged long before I've hit full travel. So, a small difference
there (assuming everything else is right) seems as though I have enough
travel still to go to make is so that it would not matter.
That's all.
