I place a wood dowel, with a length equal to the internal length of the
box through the lay shaft driving the real shaft out. before you do thid,
hammer a small nail in each end of the dowel, toward the edge of the
dowel. This allows rthe layshaft to drop sufficiently to remove the input
shaft, without losing the layshaft.
On assembly raise the layshaft into place and use the steel shaft to drive
the dowel out.
