I ran into almost the exact same situation this weekend, except
I was replacing a positive ground Pertronix unit with a negative
ground Pertronix because I was switching the Alpine over to negative
ground. The mounting plate for the neg unit was noticably different
than that of the pos unit, and the pos unit seemed like a much better
fit. The timing was all screwed up, I finally approached what I
thought was proper timing only with the advance against the block as
noted. I never considered that the rotor to cap position could be
way off. I'm going to take a look at the pos unit baseplate tonight,
and maybe try to duplicate it for the neg unit. I can't go back to
points as I bent the distributor shaft a little freeing up the cent.
