  Good question. Now that I think about it, I do remember seeing the
Batwing air cleaner assembly in the Series I & II parts books. Well...I
looked it up and there it is. Page 30 of the Engine section, Plate F.
The parts description calls the assembly: Air cleaner (Export Type),
part number AC-E/AC10262. The mesh air cleaners that we know to be the
most common type is referred to as Air Cleaner (Standard).

  The only thing I can derive from this is that maybe the "Batwing" Air
cleaner assembly was used in countries where dust was of high concern,
maybe Africa or some other country like that? Just a thought, but I
can't say I've ever seen a Series I or II with the Batwing on it as
standard equipment. I'm sure it's safe to say that North American S I &
II Alpines weren't equipped with them.
