Jay,

         Join the club of internal 56K modem owners that can't use them
because the the telephone lines won't support this speed. The modems then
cut back to the speed that can be supported.

         You can test to see if your telephone lines can support this 56K
by using W98 Hyper Terminal under accessories but you say you have an iMac
so not sure how to do it on a Mac. The number to dial is 1-847-262-6000 and
login as "line" with a password ""test". I think US Robotics also supply a
line test from their home page.
