Steve, Brent and others:
In the archives for September 1997 (maybe 98) there is an extensive
discussion of this issue which may be of interest. For many reasons that
look right on paper several knowledgeable people on this list thought the
3.89 differential ratio was a bad idea with an overdrive. I remember this
well since I had the winter before replaced my trashed 4.22 with a 3.89 and
thereafter had the good fortune to come upon an overdrive unit which I had
not yet installed. I was afraid I had made a big mistake based on what I was
reading ("...the car will be a slug...."). The concern basically was
burning out valves while lugging the engine at low rpm at medium speeds.
Others I knew such as Tony Leeming had the 3.89 set up and just loved it as
does Steve S. Well, I just have to say that it is a dream come true.
Driving to SUNI with the 3.89 and the OD was better than any highway trip I
have ever had in an Alpine (and that includes Seattle to Baltimore and back
in a nonOD Series IV years ago when I was young and foolish).

 Brent:
I converted my Series V to overdrive. It had a 4:22 rear with a stock 4
speed which was useless for highway driving (RPM's way too high). With the
overdrive installed, I changed out the differential to a 3:9 unit and it's
great. (Thanks to Tiger Tom for talking me into this setup). >>
