One ave of approach that has not been mentioned here is the "garage"
painter. If you go to the local paint store, you can get the phone numbers
of a few guys in your area who paint cars out of their garage. You can also
get some indication of how good they are by the recommendation of the paint
store owner. Any one of them that is worth their salt will have a photo
album and will give you the number of the car owner to verify if they were
in fact a happy customer.
These guys generally paint 8-10 cars a year out of their garage. Many
of them spray cars for the expensive shops during the week but do paint and
body on the weekend to make some extra cash. Their overhead is low, and they
don't have to deal with EPA, OSHA, IRS, SOC SEC, NAMBLA or any other of
those parasitic organizations that keep people from making money. (I await
the flames!)
But seriously, since they are the guys who might end up spraying your
car for $3000 at the Big Shop, you might as well have them do it anyway for
half the cost.
And the LAST way to get a quality paint job for low cost is to have a
prepared car and take it to the local community college that does paint and
body training. If you buy the paint and consumables, they will paint it for
$40.00 or there abouts. If they screw up, they paint it again and again till
it looks right.
So there are more ave than The Big Paint Shop, Earl Schieb. and Maaco.
Good Luck and Caveat emptor or whatever. Lou
