Funny you should mention this. I bought a new one from SS about 7 years
ago. It hasn't seen much mileage, since the first part of those 7 years
were during restoration, and this last 2 years have been idle too.
Anyway, the alignment shop showed me it was already shot - they held the
wheels and turned the steering wheel and showed me the movement on one
side. And, this is a new one!
But, this weekend, I was flipping through a Jaguar parts supplier catelog.
The Jaguar has the same set up and the same problem - but, they have a
cure! It has a seeled bearing and nylon cup unit that presses into the
existing rod. I don't know yet if it is the correct size for the rod or
the correct size for the threaded part. They have two - a .910" diameter
one and a 1.002" diameter one depending on the size. They are $29.95 each.
As to your other questions, yes, that rod should be parallel. Yes, there
is some type of a plate there - but I'm not sure it meets with your
description. Finally, I just put a SIV/V entire front end on a S3 body
without problem. All the holes lined right up and fit. The toe in was
completely messed up. But, it aligned up fine (well as best as could be
with that cross linkage).
