BINGO! Been there, done that. The alt light IS KEY in getting this to
work. And Gary's suggestion of getting the CAPRI wiring is right on.
That's what I did when I got my (shhhhh) Nissan alt in there. The alt
light is NOT just a light. The power actually goes through the light to
the coils in the alternator. This power gives the coils a preliminary
charge that "primes" the alternator to get working.

Ok, people will disagree with my terminology. But it's still correct.
You'll be very happy once you've got this wired right.

I just took the Z diagram, traced the entire alternator circuit, and made
sure mine was the same. Cleared up the problem immediately.
