Joe,
I've spotted your overheating problem straight off.
It that lousy Holbay top end and those troublesome carbs.
Take them off, box them up, and send them to me. I'll send you some nice
stock parts that will not let you go fast enough to overheat. (hey, it's
worth a try)

Seriously, my car was doing similar things until recently. I removed the
rad, thermo housing and water pump. Cleaned out the block as best I
could with a straightened coat hanger, flushed, flushed, flushed the
block. Checked the water pump impellor wasn't slipping on its shaft,
replaced the thermostat (and checked the new one in a pot of water on
the stove before it went in), and finally inspected the radiator fins
(mine were all rusted away) and looked inside as best I could for
blocked cores (yep, some of them too). One recored radiator (Hillman
core fits) and she is as cool as can be.

BTW - I also fitted a thermo fan in front of the radiator, removing the
engine-driven fan. The thermo only cuts in when the car is sitting
idling for 5 or more minutes.

BTW2 - When I had the gearbox out last year, I also removed the back
welsh plug (core plug?) and did the coat hanger trick from the back of
the motor.

Cheers,
Paul.
