Are these the early zenith downdraughts, or later cd zenith strombergs?
If the early ones it could be a problem with the accerator pump which
essentially richens the mixture when opening the throttle, is either not
working, or pumping too much. It is a small plunger type actuator on the
side of the carb. The fuel exits through a small tube you can see in the
throat of the carb near the top (with the air cleaner off). When depressing
the accelerator you should see it squirt a small amount of petrol. You can
do this a few times with the motor off to check, before the float bowl
empties of fuel.
