speedo cable

Hello Alpine Group:

The speedometer cable in my Series 5 broke at the transmission housing.
After I unscrewed the cable at the tranny and removed the two half-inch
bolts securing a cover, there is a metal shaft still sticking out of the
tranny housing, surrounded by some sort of a metal washer-type thing
that appears to have a "sawcut" in it. It turns freely, but does not
seem to unscrew.

I know that my terms are not very technical, but the question is: how do
I remove this broken part from the tranny housing (or do I?) in order to
install a new speedo cable?

Any tips would really be appreciated.

Ed Howard
