Tom,
Futher to Chuck's advice on DIY gaskets:
Use a small Engineers hammer (ball pein) to make the bolt holes in the
gasket. Lay the gasket over the part (eg thermo housing) and then gently
tap around the outline of the bolt holes with 'ball' side of the hammer
until you cut through the gasket. Perfect hole!
I made most of the gaskets for my thermo housing & water pump. These
gaskets aren't readily available here in Australia, and the couple that
*were* among spares for my car cames from 'Noah's Gasket Co', rather
crisp and warped.
I also found the 'smear' of Permatex on each surface (metal, gasket face
1, gasket face 2, metal) worked first time, every time for me. I also
used 'Never Seize' on the thermo housing bolts. To get the bolts out
took me a week of Penetrene and rocking the bolts back and forth each
night after work, so I didn't want to face that again!
Cheers,
Paul.
