I thought I'd give you some info on the autocross event held last weekend at
Ft. Worth, Tx. The SCCA has a National Tour autocross series and takes it
all over the USA. We used the parking lot of the Texas Motor Speedway for
the autocross and the NASCAR garages for the social. Some of the autocrossers
also bought time on the NASCAR oval ($25 for 3 laps, I think). There were
exactly two SRL 311's, mine and Mike Steinbach's from TDROC, and we ran CSP
(slightly modified). Mike has the Solex setup. On Saturday Mike and I ran
78 second laps and the fastest cars in our class ran 71 second laps. Four
Honda CRX's, a Civic, and an RX7 beat us. I changed to the heavier sway bar
and put on Kuhmo autocross tires for Sunday, and ran a 71 second lap.
Unfortunately, the RX7 ran a 68 second lap. The course was reversed from
day one to day two, and most people found the second day course faster. I
gained three positions on the field, but not enough to beat the Hondas,
because they took the best time from each day and added them together. If
only I had put on the tires a day earlier!!. I have a limited slip and a
rear sway bar to put on for future events. The best part of the weekend was
that I beat my son Andy, who also competed in my Roadster. He's been
beating me the last few years, but he got married, changed jobs, and gained
50 pounds, all of which took away his "edge". One of the coolest cars of
the 300 entries was a three-rotor Mazda Cosmo engined Bugeye Sprite. About
450 horsepower. The SCCA website has the entries and results.

By the way, I've registered to go to the Z-Car event in Las Vegas and am
registering for the Shasta events this week. I go to a family reunion in
Colorado in between. I'll take the Roadster and autocross it at both events
if I can, but Thunderhill is out because of the travel time from Colorado.
My wife and I have agreed that we can go to both events if we install a
sprinkler system for the front lawn and repaint the house (done by
professionals). I think it will be worth it.
