Sorry it took so long to respond and thank all those that replied and
offered information on my 1600 rebuild delema.

Just to fill everyone in on what I'm doing, I purchase a nicely restored '68
with a U-20, solex,B-cam and comp oil pan. The U-20 was a transplant by the
previous owner, as it's a 1600 badged and numbered car. I'm planning on
selling the '68 to finance the restoration of '67.5 SRL-00016, but am
keeping the U-20. I also came across 2 parts cars last summer and plucked
the engines, a '67 1600 (3main) and a '68 1600 (5main). Hense the 1600 build
questions.

If I'm understanding all the info, it's the later 5 main engine that was
used in the fork lift and offers the inexpensive parts - and that the 3 main
parts aren't compatible?

The 5 main block I have requires extensive machining and pistons, so I may
end up building the 3 main bottom end since the bores only required a slight
hoaning and everything else is fine. Also, the 5 main engine I had came with
a head with smog fittings - is an early 66-67 head comaptible with the later
68- 5 main 1600?

My bad luck...
the U-20 engine I'm pulling from the '68 starting to run a lousy the other
day, a compression check found 20psi, 90psi,145psi, 140 psi in the cyliders.
I little oil in #1&2 and the compression came up, hinting at ring problems.
Looks like I'll be tearing into that engine as well...

The saga continues....

On another note, I'll be posting some photos of SRL-00016 during it's
rebuild for all that are interested.
Thanks again to all on the list.
