I don't think sucking air will cause sticking shafts, but free play of the
shafts where they pass through the carburetor may cause intermittent binding.
I briefly had this condition until I eliminated the free-play.
This condition is probably not your problem. A few years ago, I neglected to
remove the choke cam from the carburetors. It rotated around holding the
throttle open, over revving the engine, and sending me off of a bend during
practice at the Cumberland National at the Connelsville Airport. The next
day, while gently racing in the rain, the engine exploded throwing shrapnel
through the hood of the car, setting the car on fire, and covering a section
of the track with trash and oil.
