As far as which Buick V8's are the same, I believe from 1963 to
present(2003) all the 'Rover' motors are the same. That is a 2003 4.6 HSE
with crank sensor will fill in a 1963 F-85. The motors went through several
evolutions, starting out as a 215 ci, then being called a 3500, bored to
3.9, then called a 4.0, a short lived 4.2 and the largest 4.6. Several
companies have pumped these motors up to 400-500 hp and is a very adaptable
motor.
If you got to a late model PI motor, consider that you will have a computer
nightmare and the engine is complete managed by them.
Just my thoughts, Charly
