Russ pretty much summed it up. The rod stretches & the housing bore  goes 
oval. Then the inner edges of the parting faces of the bearing shells  turn 
into 
oil scrapers, metal transfer begins & the journal picks up the  bearing... 
IF the crank isn't fubar, IF you got all the trash out, & IF the BE  bore 
isn't oval... you MIGHT be able to patch it... but mechanical DNFs really  suck.
