The problem with a stock type copper gasket is when you have milled the head
enough,  the gasket is actually into the combustion chamber slightly right
next to the inlet valve.  The protrusion vibrates, the ring on the gasket
splits, then the sharp edges give you an instant pre-ignition source and soon,
at racing revs, a neat hole right in the center of the piston.

  In my opinion, the compression ratio argument doesn't hold up. Most of
  us racing with 87mm forged pistons must custom order pistons.  It's easy
  enough to specify 0.025 more compression height in order to make up for
  the difference in gasket thickness.
