Chuck,

Your experience was similar to mine, although I sold road cars. I know they
prefer lower reserves (they don?t earn a buyer?s premium if it doesn?t sell;
that said, I?m surprised how many cars don?t reach reserve) but BaT has several
main factors that make it a better place for me to market a car ? 1) the
auctions attract interest of knowledgeable bidders, 2) the seller can gauge the
interest of readers by reading the comments and post further information,
photos and videos if requested, 3) knowledgeable readers offer education about
a given marque and model during the auction, 4) readers can research make and
model in the BaT archives for guidance about what to expect the high bid range
would likely be (I bought a race car that had been featured on BaT 3+ years
ago, before auctions were offered, and I was able to read all of the comments
and better judge the value of the car), 5) readers and bidders can look at past
BaT auctions to gauge whether to trust the seller, 6) BaT is going to take the
5% buyers premium (up to $5000) from the high bidder?s credit account the
second the gavel falls, and 7) the two-minute clock reset allows the bidding
to reach its true limit.

The seller has to sell him or herself, establishing trust with the bidders and
readers. Just after I sold a 1957 Morgan four seater another one (seemingly a
decent example, although without a lot of sparkle) appeared on BaT and sold for
about half what mine did ? the buyer appeared only once or twice and didn?t
offer much information and the best photos (no videos were offered) appeared to
have been taken after the car was pushed out into the sunshine after the car
had had a ten year rest and recent wipe-down. The buyer didn?t tell the car?s
story in an appealing way so the bidders mostly had only the BaT description
and online photos to judge the car and seller by.

Having sold my car and that of a late friend I would feel much more confident
in buying a car through a BaT auction than eBay or an unfamiliar car dealer. I
would expect to pay more, but I could better judge the car?s condition and the
seller?s reputation. I?ve got a very nice 1970 Mini woody wagon that I?ll
probably post there in the next couple of months.
