Bob:

I used only sandpaper when refinishing my BJ8 dash.  I started with coarse
and worked towards fine when removing the old varnish.  Use a long flat
block.

Next, I coated the dash with tung oil.  Note: tung oil will be a slightly
darker finish than OEM - but I used it to hide the cracks in the veneer.

I used a marine varnish with lots of light coats and sanding in between
coats when the finish was dry.

I finished the dash in 1999 and installed it several years later.  It still
looks good.
