You are on the right track. Last year brazed an Exhaust manifold on a
Hercules in a old air compressor and is working just fine. A nice even
preheat and long slow cool down is the key. Bury it in floor dry!
Insulates and is nonflammable. Easier to clean than the oven. Arc
welding with good cast rod works fine also. Preheat, weld a little, peen
the bead, weld some more, peen, etc, cool slooooow. Whatever process you
are most comfortable with. Find some cast and practice.
