I think this is the email you have all been waiting for. It will be rather
lengthy, please bear with me. I go to work at 0200 and returned home from
the meeting this morning at 0130. Back in the office at 0730 today with a
little time to between jobs to post this mail.
I am going to highlight the changes not use the exact verbiage, I haven't
written it yet.
Cars
1) There will some wording changes to definitions re: roadsters and
streamlining. DO NOT worry there are no changes being made to the current
rules. These changes are housekeeping only.
2) There will be additional tech wording added to VOT classes re: belly
pans, roll cages(SCTA approved ONLY), and firewalls. Any car that does not
pass tech will be put on the trailer.
3) T-Tops and moon roofs. Wording will be added that t-tops and moon roofs
must be retained in a similar fashion as windshields and rear windows, i. e.
with tabs or straps. Vehicles with t-tops or moon roofs will be considered
as open cars and MUST have a full, approved roll cage.
4) Modified Sports - Wording will added to indicate at what location the
front fenders may be removed to lengthen the nose on a uni-body car. Fenders
may be removed at the stock fender break or no more than 6" from the base of
the windshield, measured at the center of the car. Remember, in this class
the entrant must provide documentation of the stock vehicle prior to
modification.
5) Add speed ratings for Q-H tires, ranging from 100 mph(Q) to 140 mph(H).
6) Add that a headsock meeting SFI 3.3 specs or a helmet skirt must be worn
by all drivers.
7) Gas Coupe & Sedan class - change the reference to "headlight air scoop"
to "headlight air intake". Air scoops are not defined in the book.
8) Drop the date of Jan 1,2001 for the required battery disconnect. It is
now a requirement, Sect III-11.
9) Add to all pickup classes that a bed cover may be used as long as it is
no higher than the edge of the bed. A
bed cap, Bell Tech, etc., maybe used as long as it does not offer any aero
advantage. Pickups may run with the tailgate up, lowered or removed.
10) Top Chop, Sect IV-7 - remove sentence "Tops must be widened ...of the
vehicle."
Three items of interest to list include:
1) Add fuel Modified Sports classes - a strong argument was made in favor of
dropping the NOS two class jump in GT & MS classes and adding a fuel class
to MS. The vote was 5 to 4 against, 4 abstaining. The basic reasoning being
that the class is starting to mutate into gasoline streamliners and adding
classes will put other competitors at a disadvantage in the points
championship race at the dry lakes. By adding classes a MS entry could amass
several points against someone else who cannot class jump.
2) Rotary factor - I have not participated in the discussions recently as we
did not have a head tech guy until last week. Steve Batchelor has again
stepped up to handle this job. I thought that this item was glossed over at
the rules meetings and the first vote. Steve has agreeded to look into the
factor issue for 2002. I gave Steve a stack of emails going back to August
on this subject. After I culled the repetitive mails the pile was almost
1.5" tall. Steve's contact number is (661) 944-9676 home & fax. This info
has been in the past few rulebooks so I am at a loss as to the questions we
have had on the list as to who to contact with tech questions.
3) Nostalgia Category - At the original vote this item was tabled as to not
being complete in it's presentation. Steve and Lee Kennedy then proceeded to
gather further info from interested parties to try and present a concrete
suggestion for voting last night. They realized that this issue is too far
reaching and that the category could not be put into place for 2001 with
rules that would be fair to all. The board made a commitment to vote either
for or against the addition of this category in July of this year for
implementation in 2002. Steve has formed another committee to be co-chaired
by Dave Bloomberg and Bobby Sykes, originators of the original proposal. The
committee will consist of these two Steve, Lee, David Parks and others. I
will posted contact info as soon as I receive it from Dave. I think this may
be the last chance to get this category added, at least there is a
commitment for serious consideration. Please standby for info.
In addition to the above Roy Creel has formed a committee to review and
modify our rules procedures.
It sounds like the SCTA has gone the way of corporate America by sending all
this to committee. The association is so large now that the old methods are
not valid any longer. Trust me in this - your concerns are paramount to the
SCTA and your input is valuable.
