In my discussion of the way records are set, I was not suggesting that
we go back to the three pass deal because the two pass record is not
sufficient. I don't know when this three pass requirement started, but I
suspect it was for convenience of operation's sake and it was unique to
SCTA, the private settings always used a qualifying and a back up run,
I'm sure. To go back now to the three pass situation would be unfair to
the current record holders. 

You have to have great respect for those that set records under those
rules, however, when you consider the type of technology and equipment
they employed. Like Dan, I remember working my post on record runs while
my competition was in the pits working on their cars. We did start
qualifying by 10 AM in most cases, but we has far fewer entries to
contend with. To me the thing that I miss is the aura of Record Runs in
the early morning. It was also special as a spectator (which I was much
more often than a participant).
