If you're running or crewing a car and having any success you are
generally on the salt until they chase us off at dusk (approximately 8PM). By
the time you stagger back to your room, shower, and get something to eat (the
popular places are the buffet dinner places in the large hotels) it's close
to 11PM. After a day in the 100deg. temp and the direct sun everybody's
pretty drained. The big evening outings seem to be the Bean Bandits Barbeque
at the KOA, the "Two-Club" banquet at the Stateline Casino, and the "End of
The Road" event put on by the guys on this list.
If you're running record return runs the next day you want to be on the
salt by 5:45-6AM, which means that you should allow at least an hour to have
breakfast and get out to the "end of the road" 15 minutes away.
By my math this leaves less than 6 hours to sleep. In the old days when
we were young(er) we could party late, get up with little or no sleep, and
still do a fair job. Nowadays nobody seems to do that.
The social activity and bench racing beyond what goes on at the salt
seems to be concentrated at the Stateline Casino/Hotel and the Silversmith
Hotel across the street. The street rodders and other fans who aren't
"thrashing" congregate there for a while after the dinner
hour..................Ardun Doug King
