They're questionable, even on the street. I was
taking a short road trip across southern Georgia
on my BMW one summer and started to wear an old
open face Bell that I had kicking around the
closet. I had second thoughts and grabbed up my
full-face instead. A couple hundred miles out I
hit a heavy thunderstorm, found the slickest
piece of pavement I could locate, and dismounted
the bike while still in motion. My head hit the
pavement, and popped my jaw a pretty good one. I
was thankful I had selected the full face. That
night, in the motel room, when I went to put my
helmet up on the closet shelf, I noticed a crack
in the shell right along my jaw line, as well as
multiple rows of foggy print which said something
like "Shell Damaged - DO NOT USE" over and over
in little print. I guess it was something the
manufacturer put in to let you know when your
helmet had been bumped too hard (I think it was
an Arai helmet). At any rate, seeing the crack
in the helmet I realized that it would have been
one helluvah crack on the jaw had I worn the open
face. I would never again consider, or even own,
an open face hellmet for any use, much less racing!
