Besides
the drag of a wide tire, problems of growth and sidewall flex need to be
considered. Also, with a narrower tire, there will be more pounds per square
inch on the contact area, which I think helps on a slick surface.   Terry

......... All things being equal, does not the contact patch area stay the
same irregardless  of  of wide/length of tire ? Then,it would seem to be an
advantage to have a narrower tire if only to counter-act planing, as in
hydro-planing,but now from air under the now lifting surface...........Bob,
