Hi Folks, I note Joe Timney's input on this subject, and it is
authoritative.
The idea of solid engine mounts at each of the four corners of the
engine block is intriguing, involving as it does the fact that the block
then becomes a stressed member of the frame, a job it is not designed
for. It is conceivable to me that frame flexing at high speed over
bumps could actually flex the block, which is not desirable, but since I
recognize that this form of engine mounting has been used in oval track
racing for a long time, with satisfaction, it must be okay. If there was
a problem, it would probably be evidenced by a tendency to break the
solid mounts.
Another consideration is transmission of vibration from the block to the
frame, with solid mounts, but here again the V8 engine most often used
is inherently smooth-running, especially if balanced well by the
builder, and trouble from this source is not reported.
I note that Joe agrees that the gearbox tailhousing should still be
rubber-mounted to avoid breaking the casting, especially under towing
