I just checked out the Ford LSR: On January 12, 1904 on the frozen Lake St.
Clair, Henry Ford set the Land Speed Record of 91.37. This was a three mile
long course, with the timing on the final mile. Henry was the FIRST American
to hold the LSR! Stopping was not something they tought out before the run,
and they almost hit a sailboat that was locked in the ice. "They" were Henry
Ford and his mechanic Spider Huff who hung on the side of the car holding the
throttle wide open! In testing Ford found his foot bouncing off the gas pedal
when they hit cracks in the ice. It was said they had to pry Spider away from
the car.
