When I read the article I got the impression that the cranked it in gear and 
you 
didn't do much shiffting, the gave the speed ranges of each gear. wmts

Mayf, that IS interesting, especially the Hall gearbox setup.  Couple
things jump out, I imagine this was a four-speed gearbox with the torque
converter and no clutch.  So, when he selected first gear on the
starting grid at rest, there would be a fairly hard shock to the box
from the input shaft from the converter going from idle speed, 1500 plus
probably, to zero.  But that didn't break anything, from the report.
The use of only three back-cut dogs on the gears gave plenty of backlash
to let them engage freely with clutchless shifting.


The other thing, all that broiling heat from the converter represented
wasted power from the engine, churning oil in the slipping converter.
But there again, it worked, the car was successful.  Cheers Bill
