Dan,

So many of the messages I receive are, to me, pure nonsense. This is an
excellent use of this network!

First I want to say, I am sorry your family had to experience this pain.
Unfortunately, safety devices can kill. Some times a seat belt
contributes to injury or death, but the odds are in your favor to
buckled in. And I believe in the airbag systems. They have saved
countless lives. The recent inclusion of the option of disabling the
passenger side bag is good. However, I would have preferred that a very
obnoxious light were illuminated when disabled. Conversely, just last
week I was asked to install a switch in a system (authorized by the
insurance company of the customer), I refused to do the service because
I don't want to take on that responsibility since I don't have control
over the way it will be used.

If you remember, there were a few children that met death by airbag
deployment early in this technology. I believe that they were infants in
car seats, though. I would have thought that a twelve year old would not
be relegated to the rear seat, but now I find differently.

The questions I have are: Was he belted in? That could make a
difference. How hard was the impact? What would have been the
consequences, in the same circumstances, had the vehicle not had airbags?

Regardless of the unanswered questions, this is devastating for the
brother and the rest of the family. There will always be "what ifs" in
their minds.

Thanks again for this post.

midnight last night).
