Bob, I am back home in Crown Point Indiana (35 miles from Chicago) . I just
moved back from Salt Lake City after 16 years.16 years ago The first thing I
did when I arrived at the SLC airport was to rent a car and drive to the salt
flats. The movie WFI got it right it is hallowed ground. As a kid from the
Midwest, reading Hot Rod ect. I had been waiting a long time for this moment.
six weeks later I heard of a press party organized by Terry Nish and the USFRA.
So I drove over in my '32 5 window. Terry waved me into park the coupe with the
lsr cars, and I met some of the racers for the first time. A week or two later
the coupe and I arrived at the end of the access road to witness my first event
on the salt. There was 5" or 6" of water there but that was not going to stop
me from driving out to the pits, but Dave Newby did. He didn't want to see me
drive the magnesium wheels through all that salt water. He told me to park the
coupe by his security trailer and he would find me a ride to the pits. Dave
told the next crew going to the pits that I needed a ride out and they
immediately made room for me. Thats the way it is out there, so if I can help
any one get to the salt I would like to pass along the welcome that was given
to me. Like Keith Turk said this is "our time is now" enjoy it and share it.
