You're right-- the current from that battery is what eats up the metals.

I just remembered a surface treatment for magnesium-- Dow No. 7, a
passivation; there are a few places that can do it-- usually aerospace
platers. Over this, use an epoxy primer for electrical insulation.

Another possibility for magnesium is the Dow 17 anodize.
