A dead battery with a bad cell is dead because the water in the bad cell
acts like an open circuit . If you could short out the bad cell you'd have a
good 10 volt battery . As the plates go from full charge to discharge the
plates expand and contract and that causes the flakes that short then out .
The more the charge varies the quicker the flakes build up . When a battery
sits discharged large sulphate cristals have time to form on the surface of
the plates which keeps the remaining acid from getting to the lead .
